Swim with Mobula Rays & Orca – Baja Blue Water Expedition 2024
Snorkel With orcas & Mobula Rays
Arrive in the afternoon at SJD Cabo and embark on an extraordinary adventure in Baja, Mexico! The Sea of Cortez proudly houses resident mobula rays and orcas throughout the year, with the peak excitement occurring from May to the end of July when the mobulas gather in massive schools.
Throughout the year, orcas can be spotted approximately 10 times a month. However, when schooling mobulas are present, our sightings nearly double. In 2022 and 2023, we achieved an impressive 70% success rate in encountering these majestic creatures in their natural habitat, with an almost 100% success rate of mobula rays aggregating in the months of May and June.
Our previous expeditions have granted us breathtaking sightings of blue whales, whale sharks, huge pods of dolphins, sperm whales, and humpback whales. This tour can be considered the ultimate blue water expedition anywhere in the world!
Please note that our operations comply with federal regulations, allowing us to facilitate your presence in the water when orcas are sighted. However, it is ultimately up to the orcas themselves to approach and interact with you. Based on our experience, multiple “drops”, may be necessary before the orcas feel comfortable and come closer to observe you closely. Typically, we encounter orcas 1-3 times a week from May to the end of July.
During the months of May and June, we have the opportunity to witness the massive schools of aggregating mobula rays, orcas, blue whales, fin whales, sperm whales, humpback whales, sea lions, massive pods of dolphins, manta rays, and more.
In July, while the mobula rays have mostly left the area, we still encounter a orca, blue whales, fin whales, sperm whales, giant manta rays, sea lions, and other remarkable marine species! We tend to see more whale activity in July.
On average, we spot orcas approximately 15-20 times per month during May, June, and July, although not consecutively.
When joining this trip, we encourage you to come with an open mind and no specific expectations. The ocean will graciously reveal its gifts to you. By placing yourself in the right place at the perfect time, you increase your chances of experiencing the incredible sights described above.
Orcas eating mobula rays
Every year the local orca populations visit more frequently, due to the increase in food sources in the area. We can regularly see them chow on mobula rays, sharks, turtles, mola mola and more!

Once everyone is settled in we’ll meet for our first presentations then indulge in our first chef-prepared dinner of the trip.
The next morning, gear up and get ready for 8 hours at sea. We never know what we will see, but our main focus is in-water orca encounters and large schools of mobula rays!
While out on the ocean we’ll also be looking for sea lions, giant devil rays, whales, mantas, pods of dolphins, and many more incredible animals that call these waters home. Our days will be full as we search for different schools and discover this incredible natural spectacle. Our captains for this trip are local ex-fisherman who have transitioned to working purely in marine research and eco-tourism. This is living proof of the amazing things eco-tourism can accomplish. They have developed an unrivaled passion for the ocean and know the waters around this area intimately.
