This is your chance to have a front-row seat to the Biggest Shoal on Earth!

EXCLUSIVE PHOTO BOAT -> 4 GUESTS ONLY! I am offering place on my private charter for 4 clients. Each guest gets their own room, food, lodging and lot’s of space on the boat.

The Sardine Run is a natural phenomenon, caused by the movement of currents and certain weather patterns. Because of this, we can’t guarantee that we’ll see sardines, but regular up-close encounters with sharks, dolphins, whales and sea birds guarantee this will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

With nine full sea days, this package really optimizes your opportunity to see sardines in the water. During the Sardine Run, it’s all about time and effort — the more sea days, the higher your chances.

Your adventure begins at Umtata Airport (also known as Mthatha Airport). There are daily flights here from JNB, with the flight route of JNB -> UTT. Please make sure you arrive by 3 p.m. We will meet you at the airport and transfer you to Port Saint John’s River Lodge. This luxury lodge offers the nicest accommodations in the area; we book a year out to secure rooms each year. This insures a comfortable stay for our guests.

As for the Sardine Run, from April to July, the cooler Benguela Current moves up the east coast of South Africa, resulting in the migration of millions of sardines. This provides an abundant food source, attracting predators such as sharks, other large fish, sea birds, whales and dolphins.

We spend our days moving up and down the coastline in search of sardine “bait balls.” Sightings of whales and hundreds of dolphins are common.

Diving and Snorkeling: Snorkeling is the ideal way to check out a bait ball, as the sardines often move quite fast. Snorkel gear offers an easy way to gain quick entry and exit on the boat. This also allows the boat to keep up with the action. If there is a large, static sardine bait ball, we’ll hop in on scuba to observe the action below.
